The Pale Phantom of the Peaks
You won’t find the Vaal Rhebok chilling by a river or hiding in the bush. This lean, long-necked antelope lives where the air is thin and the ground is steep—roaming the windswept mountain slopes and high plateaus of southern Africa like it’s got the map memorized.
With its light grey coat, tall ears, and long, slender legs, the Vaal Rhebok looks almost delicate—but don’t be fooled. It’s fast, sure-footed, and hyper-aware of everything in its wide-open world. Blink and it’s bounding away across the horizon, tail held high like a signal flag.
Males have short, straight horns and hold small harems of females and calves. Breeding season brings bold territorial displays, but outside of that, these antelope live quietly—feeding on shrubs and grasses, always keeping their distance.
Vaal Rhebok are extremely shy and rarely seen up close. Their pale colouring blends perfectly into rocky grasslands, and they rely on elevation and visibility to keep ahead of danger. If you do manage to see one—it’s a sight you’ll remember.
Elegant in their simplicity and rugged in their design, these highland antelope are ghostly, graceful, and pure South African mountain magic.
