Limpopo Bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus)

The Phantom of the Riverbanks

You won’t hear them coming, and half the time, you won’t even see them. The Limpopo Bushbuck is nature’s stealth specialist—perfectly camouflaged for life along rivers, thickets, and dry bushveld. But don’t let its quiet vibe fool you—this antelope is fiercely territorial and knows exactly where it belongs.

With rich brown fur, white underbellies, and dappled spots along their flanks, these medium-sized antelope melt into the bush. Males come with thick, elegant horns and a powerful build, while females are smaller and hornless. The males’ black necks and polished coats shine in the sunlight—when they’re not hiding in it.

Bushbuck live solo or in loose territories, rarely straying far from water. They’re most active at dawn, dusk, and under cover of darkness—especially near human activity. They don’t wander aimlessly either; each one keeps to a mapped-out “home zone” they defend fiercely, particularly the rams.

They may not be headline-makers like the Big Five, but the Limpopo Bushbuck is an underrated gem—quiet, strategic, and rooted deep in South Africa’s wild rhythms.
