The Warrior in a Mohawk
If a medieval knight and an antelope had a baby, it would be the Roan. With its black-and-white battle mask, upright mane, and backward-sweeping horns, this beast looks like it walked out of a fantasy epic—and into the savanna.
One of Africa’s largest antelope, Roan bulls weigh up to 300 kg and stand over 1.4 meters tall at the shoulder. Both sexes sport impressive scimitar-shaped horns, but it’s the bulls who put them to regular use—clashing in low, kneeling combat for dominance like armoured wrestlers.
Roan antelope favour open woodlands and grassy savannas, where they graze on mid-length grass and form small herds of 5–15 individuals. Each group is led by a dominant bull who’s earned his rank the hard way.
Despite their bulk, Roan are fast, agile, and not afraid to fight. When predators come calling, they don’t always run—they’ll spin around and charge. Lions know not to mess with them lightly.
